History

The Gay Mormon Literature Project (GMLP) began as a collaboration between Gerald Argetsinger, Johnny Townsend, and Jeff Laver, who set about to document literature with LGBTQ+ Mormon characters or themes. In 2013, they edited and published Latter-Gay Saints: An Anthology of Gay Mormon Fiction with Lethe Press with selections from 25 different authors and playwrights. Only promised a limited run, the book has never gone out of print.

In 2021, Kristin Perkins collected the archival material from Gerald Argetsinger and began building a digital platform to preserve the history, tropes, and beauty of LGBTQ+ Mormon literature.

The original bibliography for the GMLP was developed by Gerald, Johnny, and Jeff. Kristin and Adam McLain contributed additional entries based on their scholarship. Understanding that a truly comprehensive database is impossible, we are nonetheless continually updating this project because Mormons know how to strive for perfection. We are actively seeking new entries! Please contact us with any work you think qualifies for addition into the database.
